Martha Tonkin recently sent me an article about a C &O caboose being moved in front of City Hall with the hopes it will be the beginning of rescuing our heritage as a lumber and railroad town. All the conversations we had early on about getting the caboose donated seem to be coming to fruition. The article also asked for donation to this cause to the City Planning Commission. Those of you living in Rainelle, please give us your prespective on this.

Thank you Evenlyn,

We had our bake and hot dog sale last Saturday ... A great success....The event took place in front to the side of Krogers with great volunteers, they certainly brought their smiles and laughter with them ... enjoying the beautiful sunny brisk day, We had two sisters singing while preparing the hot dogs... and of course, Gingy always spreading the laughter and smiles keeping all of us in order...... ....

Credit goes to Susie Weber Minturn for steerheading the project ... Minturn and organized has the same name....Ranger Volunteers included Shelby Carr Bryant, Gingy Walker Manspile, Mae Staley, and many others..
Our famous bakers throughout the community brought their cakes and goodies to the bake sale ... delicious!

We had a beautiful cake made with the picture of the caboose. The caboose covered the top of the cake adorned with its rich colors of icing. http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/chessie/chessie_caboose_678.jpg

Everyone that purchased a dollar of goods would receive a ticket to register for the cake that was given away at the end of the day....

We had a picnic area where ones purchasing their lunch would be able to sit down and enjoy the great dog covered in chilli, mustard, slaw, and onions....The best of West Virginia ..... Rangers remember those great dogs. Thank you Steve and Diana Carr for bringing your chairs, tables, tents, etc........ A great look ..... Thank You...

The day was just fun with a very profitable day ... over $800

Our next events for the caboose ....The month of November and December live Xmas and wreath sale, A pancake breakfast is being planned at the Carriage Cafe with all proceeds going to the Chessie ....

The soon to be released project is to be annouced any day ....
A little hint..... Google,, Max Hayslette......

"Rainelle Restoration"
donation toward our restoration is throught the town **** non-profit****

Thank you for being a part of Rainelle....

Andy

Andy, thank you. We will be anxious to see what's to come. Rainelle has such a rich heritage. It's great to see folks, like you, working to preserve it.

Yes, the Chessie is moved !!!!

The Chessie sat on it's tracks on route 20 before the mention of the caboose on the website for a number of years.

We certainly take pride in purchasing the Chessie and moving it beside of city hall..... The cost to purchase the Caboose was $2500 (called scrap metal) plus $5000 to move the caboose...... a two day venture....lol.....

We, the Rainelle Area Planning Commission are in the plans of putting our restoration project on paper as to the cost for our project... it could be as high as $20,000 just for restoration of the caboose........A bake sale is in the works for Oct. 2, a poker run with motorcycles are planned for the spring..... live xmas trees for sale at our partially ready farmers market.....a possible Ricky K event....some grant writing....

Another real surprise to everyone... within a few months a surprise annoucment will be made which will help tremendously with the raising of money......HOPE

Keep watching on the website...... for the annoucement....

If anyone would like to make a donation please contact me... a seperate bank aocount through the town of Rainelle will be established for the Caboose project... of course non-profit tax deductable.....

Thank you .... for your support throughout the years and all of the projects I have been involved in for a better Rainelle...

  • The Ricky K concert
  • Purchasing of the US Flags for the streets of Rainelle (We purchased 700 flags)
  • The chessie project
  • The Kenneth Bragg Memorial Children's Park

Oh! We are really painting the town..... Some buildings are being painted ... owners are supply the paint and the town workers are doing the painting.... GREAT IMPROVEMENT.....

Progress slow but sure......

Evelyn and everyone, I think this is wonderful! I remember conversations in 2006 about this and the discussions about how difficult the process and the move would be.

So many of our landmarks are gone and soon, sadly, the school will be. I'm glad the caboose will available to view. I think we owe a big vote of thanks to everyone who made it happen. Andy sent some pictures of the Chessie caboose being towed to the new location:

Evelyn, thank you for the Vietnam link in the prior post. It was good to see our friend Richard Curd and others who lost their lives honored.
