Thank you Chris and Andy for this great idea. This topic/thread will cover upcoming Rainelle news. As Chris suggested, it can include family reunions, special events, weddings, festivals, visitors, celebrations, anniversaries etc. It will be a small local, online newspaper on the board with local news, announcements, etc.

The lower left corner of the home page http://www.rainellereunion.com will show the link to this topic and will often list important upcoming events.

Of course we will need some local reporters. This should be fun - we look forward to it. Dale

This is exciting and a real honor for Rainelle.

The annual “Ride for Freedom” for Prisoners of War and Missing in Action (POW/MIA) will arrive in Rainelle over Memorial Weekend. This is an annual rally for POW/MIAs left behind after our wars. The group has had this ride every year on Memorial Day weekend since 1988. It sounds like a wonderful event. I understand that J.W. Puckett and Monica Smathers are the leaders in the project. More detail can be found at http://www.greasyonline.com/content-2.html and http://lzrainelle.com/index.html

Andy sent this to me, "The motorcycles coming to town is a very nice event. It was a great time and very moving. It is about the MIA's. The school is wonderful to welcome them. I took it all in and was very impressed by many of the veterans."

Andy posted a photo that I really like. It shows a man walking down the street and Rainelle High School on the right hand side http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=prxi0xw.k9zcy30&x=0&h=1&y=kqkqvq

I hope I can make it. If I don't, I hope that many will turn out to show support. I know that Andy and many of you will be there snapping photos and (hopefully) uploading them to KodakGallery or PhotoWorks for all to enjoy.

Andy or others, please add any additional detail, photos, etc. Dale

Freddie Willey, Judy Thornton Nester's brother, was one of the most patriotic veterans in Rainelle and a dedicated civic worker. He worked diligently to make the "Ride to the Wall" an annual event and to roll out the red carpet to the riders/Vietnam Veterans. Freddie was determined that our town be outlined in American Flags. The veterans were always greeted warmly by the local VFW Post with food and arrangements made for camping/motels. It is an inspiring weekend. Freddie was an inspiring person who never gave up. We give a salute to the memory of Freddie. He was also a major planner of the Rainelle reunions. Maybe I should have typed this on the memorial page...sorry, but it just happened here...

Greetings Rainelle family and friends!

As my user name states, I'm J.W. Puckett ...Willard & Dolly's son ... Bobby Puckett (RHS Class of '66)'s little brother ... but enough of that ... Let me fill you in on L.Z. Rainelle (don't forget that name ... pass it along)

First and foremost, for those of you who have made it this far, our web site is just a click away. http://lzrainelle.com/index.html

For the past 18 years a group of veterans and supporters have made their way through Rainelle on their way to Washington, D.C. and they've not only formed some of the strongest bonds that God allows us as humans to form, they've also contributed over $20,000 to Rainelle School through financial support. To make a long story (see http://lzrainelle.com/index.html for more of the details) short, they stumbled onto Rainelle and were given a hero's welcome. Visit the Run For The Wall and Rolling Thunder web sites for more about the bond that's grown over the years between Rainelle and these determined Veterans.

Two years ago, another former Rainelle student (and former Principal at the school), Monica (Smathers) Venable, was asked by one of the Veterans if Rainelle would be willing to host a weekend event. After an initial planning meeting in Oct. 2004, plans were put in place and "L.Z. Rainelle - West Virginia Veterans' Reunion" was born.

Everything went so well last year, we knew we were on to something important, so we've pushed along with an even bigger and better Reunion for this year. We've contracted to have one of the replicas of the Viet Nam Memorial Wall in D.C. on display in Rainelle from May 25 through May 29, 2006. PLEASE, PLEASE visit the web page. Our history, schedule of events, photos from last year, IT'S ALL THERE !!!

http://lzrainelle.com/index.html

I'll check in here from time to time and try to answer any questions. Another way to reach me is our L.Z. Rainelle email which I check at least once daily.
lzrainellewvvr@lycos.com

Hope to see you in Rainelle ~~ May 25-29, 2006

J.W. Puckett

p.s. The L.Z. stands for "Landing Zone"
here's another link to try: http://www.patriotvocals.info/PatriotActivismMarioPOWMIAIssuesRTXVI2003RideToWall.htm

If you can get there and read it (kind of tough with the background they used), it says a lot about how these folks feel about Rainelle.

I was talking with Joe this afternoon and he said “you know Chris, (we are on a first name basis) Tuesday May 9th, 2006 is Primary Election Day in West Virginia”. “Joe, I didn’t know that. I guess someone neglected to report that in our Rainelle Local News folder”. “Chris, every vote makes a difference. Election outcomes are determined by those who exercise their right and vote. As the late Justin Dart said, "Vote as if your life depended on it, because it does!"” “Voting is not only our right but our responsibility as a US citizen”. “And please tell the folks to check in on these two links for some addition information”: http://www.wvsos.com/elections/main.htm http://www.mtstcil.org/vote0506.html “Joe, I will try to inform as many Rainelle residences as I can. Good Day sir”. “Talk to you later Chris”. (I just love it when he says he will talk to me later)

Attention Rainelle and WV residents: Joe wants you to get out and vote Tuesday. And allow me add to ad that if you don’t know who “Justin Dart” was, I will be glad to give you some insite.

JW: It is humbling to see what you and Monica have done for the Veterans cause and for the town of Rainelle. I remember the first time Rolling Thunder came through town. Chief Spitzer came to our office to tell us they were coming. He and the Rainelle troopers were on hand to greet and escort the motorcylists through town. It was an awe-inspiring day. Yes, Chief Spitzer was a true patriot and had a deep and thorough love for Rainelle and it's citizens. His life, aside from his family, was protecting Rainelle and it's residents. So good to see you honor him. mb LZRainelle is an impressive website - an humble thank you for all you and Monica have done.

Our of town folks - The Ponderosa has rooms available over Memorial Day weekend. I haven't stayed there in many years, but it was nice when I did stay. It isn't far from Rainelle School. The reservation information is Ponderosa Motor Lodge & Restaurant, Route 60, Rainelle, WV, Rainelle, WV 25962. The phone number is (toll free (877) 246-9972)) or (304) 438-7113.

Some history: The Ponderosa was originally built by Junior Rider of Lilly Park in Rainelle. I remember the building and development very well. The Ponderosa had a very nice zoo and some very good hunting, along with the very nice Ponderosa lodge. Junior was Tom Rider and Jane's father. Tom is now a dentist in Charlotte, NC. We had many good times with Tommy, Stewart Cales and others in Lilly Park. Dale

Thanks for the "kudos" folks, but I'm not the brains behind this ... that's Monica's area of excellence! I'm getting a couple of t-shirts made to wear for the weekend that will have "JAG" on the front. Now, for those of you who understand the military jargon, no, I wasn't in the Judge Advocate General's office. My "JAG" stands for (which will be on the back of the shirt) "Just Another Grunt" and I'm grateful to be associated with this event, in whatever capacity they need me to serve.
